The Legal Dilemma of Bitcoin Jesus

Roger Ver, known as the “Bitcoin Jesus,” is currently facing a series of serious charges from the US Department of Justice (DOJ), including tax evasion, email fraud, and submitting false tax returns. Ver was an important supporter of Bitcoin in its early days and renounced his US citizenship in 2014. He denies these accusations and claims that the US government is dissatisfied with his Bitcoin promotion rather than tax issues.

Disputes over extradition and legal disputes

The US authorities are seeking to extradite Ver back to his home country for trial, as he held a large amount of Bitcoin assets when he was arrested in Spain. Prosecutors pointed out that Ver failed to report significant capital gains from Bitcoin sales and underestimated the value of the two companies when renouncing citizenship, resulting in a tax shortfall of approximately $48 million. Ver’s defense team argued that the cryptocurrency tax laws at the time were ambiguous and the accusations were outdated.
