Faster! More natural! OpenAI launches GPT-4o, tested by reporters
On May 13th local time, OpenAI showcased product updates through LIVE. Unlike previous market news, OpenAI did not launch a search engine, GPT-4.5 or GPT-5, but instead released a new model GPT-4o in the GPT-4 series and a desktop version of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, focusing on MultiModal Machine Learning and end-to-end applications.
Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman denied that the company would release GPT-5, stating that the new version of GPT is very “magical”. According to the official website of OpenAI, the “o” in GPT-4o represents Omni, which means “omnipotent”.
According to the introduction, GPT-4o’s text, inference, and coding capabilities reach the level of GPT-4 Turbo, with twice the speed of the previous generation AI model GPT-4 Turbo, but the cost is only half of GPT-4 Turbo, and the video and audio functions have been improved. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in his blog that free users of ChatGPT can also use the newly released GPT-4o. In addition, OpenAI has partnered with Apple to launch desktop applications for macOS.
OpenAI technology leader Mira Murati said in LIVE: ‘This is the first time we have truly taken a big step in terms of usability.’
